INAUGURATION OF IAPP IN BURUNDI

On Tuesday, June 26 2018, the president of the National Assembly of Burundi, Hon. Pascal Nyabenda in collaboration with his colleague Hon. Révérien Ndikuriyo president of the Senate, chaired the inauguration and the launch ceremony of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP) chapter of Burundi. Around 90 participants with at least 70 parliamentarians was present that day. Marked by the swearing in of the members of the IAPP National Committee, the signing of the founding resolution, the solemn ceremony also saw the appointment of the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Pascal Nyabenda, who was made an Ambassador for Peace.

The president of the Senate, who hosted the IAPP launch ceremony, enthusiastically expressed his commitment to UPF and announced the composition of the IAPP-Burundi National Committee. The 13-member committee is headed by the Honorable Anicet Niyongabo who is the second vice president of the Senate. It is composed of seven deputies and six senators, all of them members of the Parliament of Burundi. They swore the following oath: 

  • Believing that it is necessary, in the exercise of our mission, to embrace universally shared values in order to build a society, a nation and a world of sustainable peace,

  • Recognizing that through this ceremony we receive an award to promote social peace, unity, solidarity and sustainable development,

We, deputies and senators, members of the Bureau of the AIPP of Burundi,

1) Hereby affirm our commitment to the objectives and principles of the IAPP, 

2) Affirm today our intention to work for peace, to solve national, sub-regional, regional and international problems in order to build a world of peace grounded in universal and sustainable values. I am committed to this.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Nyabenda highlighted his dual mandate as Honorary Co-President of AIPP-Burundi and Ambassador for Peace. He pledged to make the Burundian chapter of IAPP, along with the president of the Senate, one of the top IAPP models in Africa. Finally, he asked that UPF international delegations visit Burundi more frequently to carry out peace and development projects.
