UPF Ethiopia
How UPF Africa promotes peace in Ethiopia
Nation presentation
Situated in the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia is a vast country covering approximately 1.1 million square kilometers, marked by a diverse population and Amharic as the official language. Historically, agriculture has been a cornerstone, with coffee and other crops playing significant roles. In response to the need for economic diversification, Ethiopia is actively promoting sectors such as manufacturing, infrastructure development, and renewable energy. The nation's commitment to attracting foreign investment and fostering innovation is evident as it navigates a trajectory of economic transformation. Addressing historical challenges, Ethiopia strives for sustained and inclusive growth, with a focus on developing key industries while preserving its rich cultural heritage and historical significance.
Brief presentation of UPF
Founded in 2005 as an NGO, UPF initially lost its legal status, along with other NGOs, in 2013. Recently re-registered in 2021 due to new laws facilitating NGO registration, UPF is widely appreciated for its peace endeavors in Ethiopia, particularly during the 2005-2007 rallies across the nation. With approximately 6,000 Ambassadors for Peace (AFPs) and around 100 VIPs as AFPs, UPF has engaged in impactful projects such as organizing peace rallies during 2005-2007, conducting peace lectures in NGOs, and facilitating character education initiatives.
UPF Ethiopia is mainly collaborating with local NGOs such as VECOD, AU, and others.
